Torres Strait dhari, 2001

A dhari is a traditional dance and ceremonial headdresses from the Torres Strait. Its distinctive shape forms the central motif of the region's flag and is a symbol of cultural identity.

Traditional dharis are made from frigate bird and Torres Strait pigeon feathers but may also include cardboard, plywood, chicken feathers and cane.
