Ceremonial rabbit tail headdress, c1940

Ceremonial rabbit tail headdress, c1940

This ceremonial headdress was made by Mithaka people of far southwest Queensland in about 1940. It is made from approximately 1200 rabbit tails. It illustrates how Aboriginal people adapted to rapid changes in the landscape. Prior to the introduction of rabbits these headdresses were created from burrowing bettongs, a species that was displaced by rabbits and is now extinct in mainland Australia.
