George and Vasi Kentrotes in the Regal Café Ipswich in the 1970s. Marriage by proxenia involved the proxeniti finding a prospective bride in Greece or Australia and approaching her with an offer of marriage. Photographs might be exchanged but much depended on the judgement of the person charged with making a suitable match. George Kentrotes of the Regal Café in Ipswich arrived in Australia when he was 21. When he was 53 he was accepted by 25-year-old Vasiliki from Fratsia and they were married in Greece.George died when Vasi was 49. Collection of Joanne Stewart
