Tea-towel: Chillagoe Historical Centre. The smokestacks of the copper smelters, abandoned in the 1940s dominate the design. The ‘underground’ theme is continued with details of the spectacular cave formations in the vicinity, including the Royal Arch Cave and the Madonna Donna Cave. Collection of Glenn Cooke

Tea-towel: Gold Coast. Exotic tropical flowers and a native lorikeet surmount this map of the Gold Coast. Elephant Rock, Kirra had been an important subject for watercolourist H.C. Simpson from the 1930s but its status as an icon of the coast was soon taken over by structures such as the RSL Club at Tweed Heads. More specific locations within the Gold Coast, in this instance Currumbin Beach, are identified by overprinting. Collection of Glenn Cooke

Tea-towel: Queensland Centenary, 1959. If this was an appropriate representation of the State, Brisbane should have been represented by Parliament House rather than the Brisbane City Hall – the centre of the greater Brisbane council area. In this and many other examples, the City Hall, opened in 1930 as the home Greater Brisbane Council, was the iconic image of the city. Collection of Glenn Cooke

Tea-towel: Sunshine Coast, 1990s. The lettering of ‘Sunshine Coast’ is applied over the disc of the sun whose rays beam on the pineapples and bananas that grow in plantations as well as the key attractions: Aussie World, The Big Pineapple, Bli Bli Castle, Nostalgia Town, the Big Shell and the Ginger Factory. This towel probably dates to the 1990s as Aussie Town was opened in 1988. Collection of Glenn Cooke

Richardson's Tea-towel: map of Queensland, c1960. This tea-towel was based on map the Queensland published in the Queensland State Governments principal souvenir of the centenary 'Queensland centenary: the first 100 years 1859-1959’. It was edited by Arthur Smout with the historical assessment provided by Leslie Slaughter and was widely distributed through the state school system. The poinsettias (Brisbane’s floral emblem), the Cooktown Orchids (the State flora emblem) and the cluster of tropical fruit add a note of colour. Collection of Glenn Cooke
