Land reclamation for seaside allotments and recreation, Sandgate, 1937. These images appeared in the 1936-37 annual report of the Land Administration Board and show the progress of swamp-filling and land reclamation at Sandgate. The top image shows mangrove and ti-tree swamp cleared prior to filling. Soil was excavated and brought by tractor on light tracks before being dumped into the swamp. A little over half of the costs came from the Unemployment Relief Scheme. Each week, an average of 50 gained employment. Queensland parliamentary papers, vol 2, 1937

Vance and Nettie Palmer

Bulcock estate land sale at Caloundra, 1917. The advertising plan boasts 404 ‘superb sea view sites’ located at a tramway terminus and at a convenient distance from Brisbane. Overlooking the Bribie Passage, the Bulcock estate was the ‘sportman’s paradise for fishing, surfing and boating’. Vance and Nettie Palmer lived at Caloundra from 1925-29. The development from fishing villages to small allotments in the Sunshine Coast region was a feature of Vance Palmer’s well known novel The Passage (1930). Iwasaki project

A bomb exploded at the Iwasaki resort at Yeppoon on 29 November 1980. It ripped a large crater in an unfinished block of holiday units, causing damage estimated at $1 million.
