As well as serving as a police magistrate and commissioner of crown lands in Carpentaria, in 1882 Landsborough was awarded £2000 by the Government for his exploratory work. This he used to buy land at Caloundra where he later settled. He died at his property in 1886. Later his remains were taken to Toowong cemetery.
