Gold scales

In early Queensland goldfields the measurement of gold was an important undertaking not only because of the role of gold as a form of currency but also in gauging the success or otherwise of a claim. Gold scales such as this one were often used in established stores and Mining Exchanges.

Description: Gold scales, beam scales comprising of a central metal support and two metal dishes attached by three metal chain each to a metal beam. The set is housed in a rectangular, wooden box with a mounted built into the lid to support the central metal support. The set also contains standard weights.
