Pith helmet

Pith helmet

Pith helmets are synonymous with white men in the tropics. The helmet symbolises colonial hierarchies and race relations, and are used to assert authority. Worn by a range of people from officials to plantation owners and scientists, they persisted in use in Queensland railways until the 1980s.
